About Thimphu
Welcome to Thimphu: The Soul of the Kingdom
Nestled in a fertile valley along the banks of the Wang Chhu River, Thimphu is far more than a capital city. Situated between 2,248 and 2,648 meters above sea level, it stands as one of the highest capitals in the world – a place where ancient tradition thrives alongside 21st-century life.
A Modern Capital with an Ancient Heart
Thimphu officially became Bhutan’s administrative capital between 1955 and 1961 during the reign of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Today, it remains a rare global anomaly: a growing city of approximately 145,000 residents that has famously resisted traffic lights. Instead, white-gloved police officers direct vehicles with rhythmic, almost choreographed movements, reflecting the city’s calm and orderly character.
The skyline itself is a testament to Bhutan’s cultural pride. Strict zoning regulations ensure that every building adheres to traditional architectural styles, preserving a visual harmony rarely seen in modern urban centers.
Where Monasteries Meet Modern Living
Thimphu offers a unique urban experience where spirituality and modernity coexist seamlessly. A typical day might begin with quiet reflection at a monastery and end in a contemporary café.
Key landmarks include the majestic Tashichho Dzong (“Fortress of the Glorious Religion”), which serves as the seat of government and the central monastic body. Overlooking the valley is the iconic Buddha Dordenma, a 169-foot bronze statue plated in gold that symbolizes peace and offers panoramic views of the city.
The National Memorial Chorten is a focal point of daily spiritual life, where people gather to circumambulate and offer prayers. Meanwhile, the Weekend Market provides a lively contrast, showcasing local produce, dried chilies, and intricately woven textiles – capturing the vibrant everyday life of the city.
Visiting in Spring
Thimphu’s seasonal beauty makes timing an important part of the experience. For the 5th ICOEH 2026 conference at the end of April, delegates can expect the valley at its finest:
- April (18°C – 20°C): Spring awakens the valley with crisp blue skies and blooming flora – ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and photography.
- May (20°C – 23°C): A transitional period marked by warmer days and the arrival of pre-monsoon showers, turning the landscape lush and vibrant.
We look forward to welcoming you to Thimphu for ICOEH 2026.
